Spartans Will Stay Safe

Need-to-know messages

As the spring semester continues and the university deals with the novel coronavirus outbreak, we encourage you to stay safe. Many events and large gatherings across campus are being postponed or canceled. MSU urges everyone to consider the health implications of large gatherings and evaluate the essential nature of the events.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. Federal and state public health officials are urging people to clean your hands often, stay home if you are sick and practice social distancing.

It's also important to remember the steps you can take to prevent the spread of any virus:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water. If not available, use hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid large crowds in areas where viruses are prevalent.
  • Stay home while you are sick and avoid close contact with others.
  • Cover your mouth/nose with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing.
  • Clean your doorknobs, light switches and commonly touched areas with disinfectant wipes frequently.

Helping friends be safe: Watch out for one another!

  • Most students choose to watch out for friends during celebratory events and make plans to get home safely.
  • More than 9 out of 10 students approve of cutting off a friend who has had too much to drink.
  • More than 9 out of 10 students approve of getting medical help for a friend.
  • Nearly 9 out of 10 students say they would call 911 for a friend in need.
  • Of those students who choose to drink during a celebration, most eat before or while drinking to help limit the negative effects of alcohol.
